I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. I am hearing this more and more from people of all ages. Maybe the life you are living doesn't quite resemble your childhood fantasies. No matter where you find yourself, professionally or personally, it is never too late to move closer to living your purpose.
#1 What is your purpose?
Finding purpose in your life is not as elusive as it may seem. When we participate in those things which we enjoy, and those things at which we are gifted, we are on the path to a life of meaning. Think about the last time you became so engrossed in an activity that you lost all track of time. That may be a clue as to what may make for a more fulfilling life path. If in some way your interests and talents serve to benefit others, there's an added bonus. Follow your passion. Do good to others. That's living the dream.
#2 DO your passion
This is the part I have always struggled with. I have a sneaking suspicion that maybe you have too. It's human nature. The tendency toward procrastination. As they say--whoever they are-- procrastination is just a manifestation of perfectionism. Let go of the need to be perfect. Do your passion. Even if it feels uncomfortable. Even if it feels like a waste of money, time or other resources. You will not be sorry.
#3 KEEP DOING IT
Once you have begun to DO this thing, whether it is creative in nature or ballroom dancing, or sky diving while wearing a pink tutu and leopard skin boots, keep doing it. There will come a time when that little voice in the back of your head will try to tell you that you can't. You're too old. You're too young. You don't have enough money. You don't have the time. On and on the list goes. You will start to doubt yourself. Who do I think I am doing this *thing* that I have no business doing? STOP. THE. MADNESS. Do it anyway. Hit the override button and DO IT ANYWAY.
That's pretty much it. I have found over time, the more we follow our bliss, the more our bliss finds us. As you begin to engage with those things which ignite your spirit more and more, those other parts of your life that do not carry as much meaning begin to fall away. It is entirely possible to live the life you have imagined. Only, imagining is not enough. Take action and watch your life begin to transform.
