Seldom do our minds associate the heart with the color green. Green means money. Green reminds us of nature. We may even call someone green with envy. So you might be surprised to learn that green is the color assigned to the Heart Chakra, Anahata. The heart what? Chakra. Pronounced Ch like cheese not Ch like Charlize Theron. In ancient Eastern systems of thought the human body consists of not just one physical body, but several subtle bodies. The chakras can be found within the energy body.
Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means wheel or vortex. According to ancient Ayurvedic teachings, there are at least seven chakras found throughout the energy body. It is believed that these chakras are wheels of light that act like a spinning vortex of energy in the body. Anahata, or the heart center can be found where the upper and lower chakras converge.
As a result of life experience, traumas big and small, the chakras can become imbalanced. A blockage can be created where life force energy, or Prana, cannot flow freely through the energy centers. On the flip side, a chakra may become too open, leading to an overflow of energy in that particular space within the body. A heart chakra that is blocked may cause a person to become self-centered, cold-hearted, isolated or lonely. A heart chakra that is too open may result in codependency or feeling needy. Only when the heart chakra is balanced can a person give and receive love in a healthy way.
The heart chakra is the fourth chakra. It is unique as it is in the center of all of the chakras. This is why Anahata is commonly called the "heart center." While the first three chakras deal mainly with issues of survival and individualism, the fifth sixth and seventh chakras relate to spirituality and metaphysical reality. The fourth chakra is special because this is where the tangible meets the abstract. Awakening the heart chakra results in a shift in focus from self preservation to one that is concerned for the health and well-being of all. The heart connects our feminine and masculine energies. It bridges the gap between activity and stillness. It gives us the ability to share our individual beauty with the world and receive the beauty the world has to share with us.
There are plenty of healing modalities that work to balance the chakras. Yoga, guided meditation and Reiki can all be used to bring balance to the energy body. Even wearing the color green can act on your subconscious in such a way that leads to healing of the Heart Chakra. May you find peace on your journey and send love to all you encounter. Happy heart opening! (or closing...) Namaste
